The Nonsense Of Poetry

One thing is clear to me:
You are a fool
if you enjoy the nonsense
that is poetry.
It does not build buildings
nor does it cure a cold,
it cannot predict
how the future may unfold.
But humanity is no fool –
in a world
where data reigns supreme,
rationality may rule,
and solutions are spun upon the logic spool
poetry truly is a sorry tool.
It only gave me
the brightest smile
when I was a little boy;
opened my heart,
and made me cry
tears of joy.
It only quenched the grief in me
when grandfather left for eternity.
It just raised me up
when defeated on the ground I laid;
kindled hope,
and made me fight another day.
It doesn’t teach you how,
but only why to live;
what a truly meaningless pursuit
poetry is.
